Kazakh Cinema Showcase

The Embassy of Kazakhstan in the U.S. and the Honorary Consulate of Kazakhstan in Los Angeles are proud to announce a major cultural event in conjunction with the UCLA Film & Television Archive.

Beginning on June 11, 2011 at the prestigious Hammer Museum in the Billy Wilder theater, a special film series will begin showcasing highlights of Kazakh Cinema, including a rare screening of Shaken Ajmanov’s 1966 classic, The Land of Our Fathers. Also being shown will be a recently restored print of Ermek’s Shinarbaev’s Mest (Revenge). Other films scheduled for the screenings include Nomad, The Gift to Stalin, Schizo, Kelin, Baksy, Tulpan and Racketeer.

On June 10, Kazakhstan will present (with the Hammer Museum) a performance by the Kazakh music ensemble “Turan,”. Helix Films’ Steven-Charles Jaffe, who is Kazakhstan’s Honorary Consul in Los Angeles, and Gaukhar Noortas have been working with Kazakhstan’s Ambassador to the U.S. Erlan Idrissov for more than a year on this project. They hope these programs will allow the Hollywood community to see the many rich talents that come from Kazakhstan.

Ms. Noortas is an established international businesswoman with over 15 years of venture management in the United States and in her native country, Kazakhstan, primarily in the areas of oil, gas and mineral exploration and international sales.
